The “year in cities” approach to summarising a year is something I adopted from Jason Kottke many years ago. Again, I’m reminded how much I miss Dopplr. If only Tripit were pretty/nice to use.

Abroad

  • Praia da Rocha, Portugal
  • Amsterdam, Holland

  • Stellenbosch, South Africa
  • Cape Town, South Africa
  • New York, New York, USA
  • Portland, Oregon, USA

We had a couple of brief stopovers in Singapore, but since these were just a couple of hours and we didn’t leave the gate, let alone the airport, I’m not counting them as a visit to the city itself.

The “year in cities” approach to summarising a year is something I adopted from Jason Kottke many years ago. In writing this year’s entry, I realise I somehow drafted but failed to publish 2012 and 2013’s posts; I will have to freshen them up, check they are correct the best I can without the wonderful help of sadly missed Dopplr and send them out into the world.

But for now, 2014. It was a bit of a complicated year and I ended up living in three separate places. Many of these were speaking-related trips, and you can see which conferences I was speaking at on my Lanyrd profile.

2013 was an interesting year, starting as it did with a six month sabbatical. I got a fair bit of travel done, and a LOT of writing done, and spend the entire time half working, half not. Not quite as exciting a travel year as 2010, given it was a working sabbatical, but still some interesting new places.

Less travel abroad than I’ve had in many years, as I chose to leave my international corporate career and take an interesting job helping to transform digital government. Given I lived in Newcastle and worked in central London, though, plenty of time spent on the East Coast mainline from NCL < --> KGX!

We’re in Cork this week, celebrating our anniversary and looking forward to both the Rugby World Cup quarterfinals and a close friend’s wedding at the weekend. We’ve never visited here before so it’s been nice to explore the city … and to eat our way round it!

Food so far has not disappointed, with an excellent pancakes with bacon & banana breakfast at Liberty Grill and a gorgeous ribeye steak at Strasbourg Goose particular highlights. Intending to keep up the gastronomic exploration over the coming days…

2010 was a massive travel year, not least because Elly & I took a three month sabbatical from Oct-Dec. We had an absolutely amazing time travelling and since I bought a proper digital SLR just before going, we are still sorting through the 33,000 (yes, really!) photos I took in those 100 days! Many are already on Flickr with more to follow, and highlights are on our travel blog.
