Making things useful, getting stuff done

Links for Tues 8 Nov 05

  • Seems people have been living on the space station for 5 years now. This just seems crazy and scifi — although not so much as IBM “slowing the speed of light”….
  • Ajax hits the mainstream. Interestingly this seems to have gotten out into the world a lot faster than I remember a lot of past innovations doing. Maybe it’s because it’s riding the new investment wave behind this elusive Web 2.0 idea…
  • On that note, Eric has written a great article about the demands Ajax places on web design. I agree that we’re going to need more of an HCI/UI focus to give users a consistent and useful experience when using Ajax.
  • Apparently the candidates for the Tory leadership are bickering over who is mimicking Tony Blair more. Strangely I don’t think that’s their biggest problem…
  • Zeldman makes a good point that those affected by the Pakistan earthquake need help more now than ever … and that Western governments don’t seem to be doing a great deal to help at the moment

I’ve never felt the love for the ISS. Mir was up in space for 15 years, and in 1986 it was a pretty awesome achievement. Sure, I wouldn’t be able to put a space station up in orbit, but I’ve never seen what was so ground-breaking about the ISS, just seems like Mir II. What does the ISS actually do up there anyway, apart from cost money? They should have spent the money on a space elevator instead, then they could be spending the money they’d have saved on an orbiting construction yard and docking platform to launch humanity off to distant worlds. Much better plan. Vote radiac for president!

The Pakistan thing, oh, yeah. Here’s my theory. Pakistan isn’t a world economic power, nor do we need the location strategically (more like they need us), nor do they have oil.

Plus, there were lots of disasters this year, and gosh, we’re disastered out. Issue fatigue, I think they call it.
    …
Hey, did you catch Monday’s Desperate Housewives?

Just in case it could be missed, I don’t actually feel my comment above is correct; I was being cynically sarcastic.
