Next time someone tells me that it “doesn’t matter” if you’re gay, that there’s no prejudice anymore, that we’re safe anywhere, that it’s all in our minds, unfortunately I’ll be able to point them to the story of James Maestas being beaten until he was unconscious. As T says, it’s a cold shocking “Matthew Sheppard moment”. James remains in a critical condition.

It really shocked Santa Fe. The collective cry of “why here, of all places.”
Seeing that here is the same as seeing it in San Franciso, Greenwich Village or Key West.

Yeah, there was a similar incident in Cape Town a few years ago. Although South Africa is not the most forward-looking country (in terms of attitudes; the constitution is the most progressive in the world I think), Cape Town is definitely the city to be gay in. The community probably felt very similar to Sante Fe.
