Have you tried using a "natural" keyboard? A few years ago, I was getting terrible numbness in my forearms while typing. I switched to a Microsoft natural keyboard and it went away entirely (and so did my ability to type at all for several days...). You can say what you like about their software, but Microsoft make good hardware! (Or relabel it, anyway.)

You could try pushing your luck with work and angle for a Maltron keyboard - http://www.maltron.com.

I switched to a natural keyboard about 4 years ago which made a big difference, although my symptoms weren't as bad as yours.

Learn all the keyboard shortcuts - one advantage (?) of growing up in a terminal UNIX environment is that I think that !?search?:s/get_rid_of/replace/ makes sense. It also doesn't involve any upper arm movement to and from the mouse.

I've heard that current teenagers are getting very dextrous thumbs, from tapping text messages into their mobiles. Ho hum. Doesn't improve their spelling though.

Thanks for the tips, guys! For the moment I'm trying the new trackball and it seems to be helping so far, as is sleeping in the wrist brace at night. If things worsen again though I'll definitely look at a natural keyboard, although it seems most of my symptoms are from using the mouse as I do type pretty well (i.e. use most of my fingers for the right keys, which is the main point of natural keyboards, isn't it?).

My main issue with something like a natural keyboard is that I will always be moving from one computer to the other and carrying a trackball with me is much more likely than a keyboard as well, particularly with the laptop!
