As some of you might have noticed, here at Meriblog we have had some homophobic and malicious comments. I found it quite amusing and Tony pointed out to me this morning that we have a pet homophobe, just in time for Xmas!
Now he also pointed out that every pet needs a name (and that “a homophobe is for life, not just for Xmas” … to which I pointed out that a homophobe is only for life if they never face up to being gay themselves 😉 ) so I thought we should have a competition.
This isn’t just to take the festive piss, but also a chance for all those of you lurking who haven’t shown yourself to do so. So what’s the best name for our pet homophobe? If you have a new idea, or like an existing one, post a comment stating your preference 😉

“…post a comment stating your preference” – in light of the context, to which preference would you be referring?
Assuming you mean the name for your new pet, I could refer you to any number of pet name websites, including FindAPet.com (other sites are available), but that would be too much hassle.
However, without going into too much detail, I’m quite a fan of “Mephistopheles” (for all you Faust freaks), or how about “Java” (on a geeky note) or even “Maentwrog”. I’m sure you could find many geeky references that would make nice pet names (like “Kvikkalkul” – allegedly used on Swedish submarines for real-time applications) if you really wanted to, but that would be a waste of the company’s time.
In summation, I think you should decide, considering you found it (or rather, it found you). But if you really want a suggestion, how about “Tiger” or “Prince” – both fantastic names (if you’re a poodle).

I think it should be a name that reflects the status as “pet homophobe”, but also allows us to refer to the pet by a name.
So far I think “Prince” (or “the homophobe previously known as Prince” 😉 ) is probably my favourite. Keep trying though, guys 😀

For a play on multiple words/phrases, “the homophobe formally know as Prince” might work…

In my personal weblog I write often about being a gay mand. And in my skepticism and sexuality weblogs queer issues come up often.
I’ve gotten used to coming home to find comments consisting only of the word “faggot” or warning that I’m headed to eternal damnation.
I tried adding a warning to my comment for that homphobic comments would be deleted. But that may have only prompted more.

Call it “Pokey”.

Being straight is so unfair! I never, ever get threatened with eternal damnation. Don’t any of those idiots care at all about me?

Rich:
As a scientist you are automatically qualified for eternal hellfire. You can heap extra coals of fire on your head by joining the ACLU, The Brights Movement or opposing the teaching of creationism in your local public schools.

That’s what I thought. I’ve done everything right, from believing humans and chimps have a common ancestor to denying the existence of absolute morality to thinking the Earth goes around the Sun, but what have I received in return? Not so much as the threat of a rainy afternoon of mild chastisement, let alone eternal perdition. Why, oh, why does nobody want to burn me at the stake? It’s so unfair.

Spot is a good name for any pet.
Although I think Pokey is a good name too.

Oh yes, I was going to reply to that…
The House of Croquet and the House of LARP (largely represented by Matt and Ryan) came up with the following suggestions: The Dance Commander, Captain Gay, Captain Pink and a few others I can’t remember now.
Thanks for the chili…
